Sugar and I began with a simple act of love—baking a batch of brownies to make our parents happy. Seeing our parents’ joy sparked something bigger in us, and soon, we were making brownies for our neighbors, friends, and extended family. Before we knew it, people were coming back, asking for more.
What started with brownies, cookies, and custom cakes quickly evolved. In 2020, when the MCO (Movement Control Order) hit, everything changed. One day, a customer requested bombolonis as a gift for a friend, and we decided to give it a try. The bombolonis were a hit, and we were inspired to perfect our recipe and expand our range of flavours, even incorporating a unique Malaysian perspective in our creations. Orders started pouring in as people wanted to send these delightful doughnuts as gifts to their loved ones during a time when physical closeness was impossible. This wasn’t just about the product—it was about bringing people together, spreading joy, and sharing moments of happiness through thoughtful, delicious gifts.
To this day, this ethos remains at the heart of all we do. From humble beginnings in a home kitchen in Subang Jaya, we’ve now grown to five stores across Malaysia, from which we Celebrate Happiness through our specialty bombolonis, cream puffs, and more. Each item is crafted with love and packaged with care, designed to bring happiness to whoever receives it.

THE “I”s BEHIND SUGAR AND I
SHARIFAH NUR ILISA
Sharifah Nur Ilisa had always been passionate about baking. Even while pursuing her degree in Economics and Finance, she spent her free time in the kitchen, perfecting her recipes and creating beautiful cakes. As her skills grew, so did her desire to turn her love for baking into something more. She enrolled in numerous culinary courses, including a Master in Cake Decorating and certifications from The Caketress, MIB, and APCA and is today the mastermind behind Sugar and I’s signature recipes and artistry.
SYED MOHD ILYAS
A mechanical engineer by trade but an entrepreneur at heart, Ilyas saw the potential in Ilisa’s passion and undeniable talent. He took a leap of faith, left the corporate world, and threw himself into the world of marketing and business, determined to make their shared vision a reality. He took various marketing courses to help grow the business, focusing on how they could scale and share their story with the world. Today, Ilyas is known as “The Bomboloni Guy”, and is the face of Sugar and I.
